I am no blogging expert. I am learning as I’m going. Some things I fuck up, somethings I pick up. Most things I just wing it. Either way here 1 thing I’ve learnt as a book blogger part 21;
Since I started blogging I have accepted quite a few requests for books I normally wouldn’t touch if I was buying them myself. With getting the books free from Authors/Publishers/Other people, it gives you the option to try new things. I always make sure I am very clear when I accept a book I am unsure whether I will like it or not. I pretty clearly state that I can give it ago, not sure if it is my thing or not. If the Author is fine with that then they just send me the book anyway.
I don’t generally give these books a bad rating either or if I do, I clearly state the book just wasn’t my genre. Pretty much saying no blame to the story or Author, just wasn’t my jam. My thing, my… Okay, I think you get it.
Why? Because sometimes saying yes to weird sounding books you are pleasantly surprised when you really enjoyed it. It gets you out of your comfort zone, makes you think of things outside of the box.
I didn’t swear once in this so. Horseshit.
(10th I won’t be doing a #1, I have an interview with a Publicist I set up. I thought it might be an interesting idea to start a post once a month about something inside the industry – What do you guys think? – Also on the 24th I will be doing spam-some-reviews day again. Feel free to just block or ignore me on that day)
I think it’s a great idea to get some input on the inner workings – publicist? Something to learn there as an indie author.

My thoughts exactly. Almost like research but funnier and in bite size.

Hahaha no you did not swear…till the end 😉 I used to accept these books but now I’m too overwhelmed and overbooked unfortunately…

Personally I think pretty much every book we don’t like falls into it’s not our thing category really no matter if it’s a loved genre or something new. No matter how bad we think it is or how much we dislike it there will be some out there that do enjoy it for whatever reason so pretty much all of my low reviews I simply state what I don’t like and move onto the next.

Agree, but then you do come across some that are just so full of errors I have to stop. I go into proofread mode and that’s it, the enjoyment is gone.

That’s true too. They ask to ignore mistakes in ARCs claiming they will be fixed but some are just beyond hope and pretty unreadable in which case I note that in my review and that it’s a possibility it will be better after publication but I couldn’t enjoy reading it.

I tend to stop with them if too many. I can’t focus on the story, I am too busy going into typo mode.

I have too when really bad. I’ve had several over my years on Netgalley that the formatting was so terrible they were unreadable leaving spaces in the middle of words or inserting random numbers/words etc.

Yeah I very rarely if ever read anything in pdf, with my kindle the font is so small. Every page I am having to zoom in.

Oh definitely, one of my likes with the Kindle is the ability to change the font to my liking to not strain my eyes and with those it’s frustrating to be smaller.

I have declined a few books, cuz i knew right away that they were not my thing and i just didn’t want to spend time with them. For example i don’t read romance, so those are automatically a nope for me.

Yeah I have some books that are automatic nos too. At the moment my pile is so big, I am being extremely picky with what I pick.

I like reading articles and interviews with people working in various parts of the writing industry. WE hear about the authors a lot so I’d be interested in seeing another perspective.

I have read so many books that were outside my normal reading genre with Netgalley, Edelweiss and author/publisher requests that I now like many other genres that I didn’t think I would. I try not to critique the spelling etc in an ARC but you are right when it becomes unreadable I give up.
